Churches in the Shape of Scripture

Churches in the Shape of Scripture
Series by Robert Prater
Spring of 2015

Part 1
We in churches of Christ are a very unique group of people. Our beliefs and practices seem very strange to some. This sermon is the beginning of a new sermon series entitled, “Churches in the Shape of Scripture.” It is our hope that these lessons will help us have a renewed conviction that being a New Testament-shaped church is a goal worth pursing, and that doing things God’s way really does matter. These lessons will be a great opportunity to invite others who might have questions surrounding what churches of Christ teach.

Part 2
Last week we began a new sermon series titled, “Churches in the Shape of Scripture.” We introduced the principle that churches of Christ are all about restoration. We looked at this notion from the Old Testament. In this second sermon in the series, we’ll take this idea of restoration over to the New Testament and focus our attention on the church.

Part 3
This is the third sermon in the series titled, “Churches in the Shape of Scripture.” We’re talking about who we are in churches of Christ. We’ve introduced the series talking about how we are a people concerned about restoring the beliefs and practices of the New Testament church. This sermon will be on “Salvation in the Shape of the New Testament” This is one of the most important differences you’ll find between churches of Christ and most other religious groups.

Part 4
Last week we started looking at “Salvation in the Shape of the New Testament.” This sermon continues looking at this issue by noting how our belief that baptism is necessary for salvation was actually the unanimous belief of Christianity for its first 1,500 years. We’ll also see the connection in the New Testament between salvation and baptism.

Click here for the Francis Chan video that Robert showed in his sermon.

Part 5
This is a continuation of our special sermon series titled “Churches in the Shape of Scripture.” This sermon discusses some of our beliefs and practices that distinguish us in churches of Christ from most other churches, particularly at our belief that baptism is a necessary condition for receiving salvation.

Part 6
This sermon is about “The Lord’s Day and the Lord’s Supper in the Shape of the New Testament.” This is another distinction we have in churches of Christ: we believe eating the Lord’s Supper every Sunday is an important part of God’s plan for the church.

Part 7
This is the second part of last week’s sermon about “The Lord’s Day and the Lord’s Supper in the Shape of the New Testament.” In this lesson, we’ll explore and contemplate what this weekly activity is all about. We’ll look at some of the terms which are associated with it in the New Testament.

Part 8
In this sermon, we’ll begin looking at “Church Organization & Leadership in the Shape of the New Testament.” This is another difference between churches of Christ and most other church groups. That difference is how the church is organized and governed. And we believe this is an important part of God’s plan for His church.

Part 9
This sermon is the second part of the previous sermon in our “Churches in the Shape of Scripture” series. We’ll continue to look at “Church Organization & Leadership in the Shape of the New Testament.” This is another difference between churches of Christ and most other church groups. That difference is how the church is organized and governed. And we believe this is an important part of God’s plan for His church.

Part 10
This sermon titled “Musical Praise in the Assembly” looks at what is probably the most obvious difference between us and many of our Bible believing friends. We’re talking about why we in churches of Christ in our worship assemblies practice vocal only praise. We’ll begin by walking through the Bible to see how we and most Christians throughout history, came to the conclusion that Christian worship was instrument-free for most of its history.

Part 11
This is the second part of last week’s sermon called “Musical Praise in the Assembly”, which looks at what is probably the most obvious difference between us and many of our Bible believing friends. We’re talking about why we in churches of Christ in our worship assemblies practice vocal only praise. We’ll begin by walking through the Bible to see how we and most Christians throughout history, came to the conclusion that Christian worship was instrument-free for most of its history.

Part 12
This sermon is a continuation of our special sermon series titled “Churches in the Shape of Scripture.” Is our practice of male leadership in our assemblies an out-of-date, sexist, chauvinistic mindset? Does the New Testament really teach what we practice? In this lesson we’ll look at the bigger picture of what the Bible says about men and women.

Part 13
This is the final sermon in the “Churches in the Shape of Scripture” series. In the last lesson we left off stating that we believe God has called men to lead in the worship assembly to serve as a visual expression of His will for male spiritual leadership in the church. This lesson focuses on Paul’s instructions regarding the roles in the assembly found in 1 Timothy 2:8-15.

THE PERFUME

As she stood in front of her 5th grade class on the very first day of school, she told the children an untruth. Like most teachers, she looked at her students and said that she loved them all the same.

However, that was impossible, because there in the front row, slumped in his seat, was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard.

Mrs Thompson had watched Teddy the year before and noticed that he did not play well with the other children, that his clothes were messy and that he constantly needed a bath. In addition, Teddy could be unpleasant.

It got to the point where Mrs. Thompson would actually take delight in marking his papers with a broad red pen, making bold X's and then putting a big "F" at the top of his papers.

At the school where Mrs. Thompson taught, she was required to review each child's past records and she put Teddy's off until last. However, when she reviewed his file, she was in for a surprise.

Teddy's first grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is a bright child with a ready laugh. He does his work neatly and has good manners... he is a joy to be around."

His second grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is an excellent student, well liked by his classmates, but he is troubled because his mother has a terminal illness and life at home must be a struggle."

His third grade teacher wrote, " His mother's death has been hard on him. He tries to do his best, but his father doesn't show much interest and his home life will soon affect him if some steps aren't taken."

Teddy's fourth grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is withdrawn and doesn't show much interest in school. He doesn't have many friends and he sometimes sleeps in class."

By now, Mrs. Thompson realized the problem and she was ashamed of herself. She felt even worse when her students brought her Christmas presents, wrapped in beautiful ribbons and bright paper, except for Teddy's.

His present was clumsily wrapped in the heavy, brown paper that he got from a grocery bag.

Mrs. Thompson took pains to open it in the middle of the other presents. Some of the children started to laugh when she found a rhinestone bracelet with some of the stones missing , and a bottle that was one-quarter full of perfume . But she stifled the children's laughter when she exclaimed how pretty the bracelet was, putting it on, and dabbing some of the perfume on her wrist. Teddy Stoddard stayed after school that day just long enough to say, "Mrs. Thompson, today you smelled just like my Mom used to."

After the children left, she cried for at least an hour. On that very day, she quit teaching reading, writing and arithmetic. Instead, she began to teach children.

Mrs. Thompson paid particular attention to Teddy. As she worked with him, his mind seemed to come alive. The more she encouraged him, the faster he responded. By the end of the year, Teddy had become one of the smartest children in the class and, despite her lie that she would love all the children the same, Teddy became one of her "teacher's pets."

A year later, she found a note under her door, from Teddy, telling her that she was still the best teacher he ever had in his whole life.

Six years went by before she got another note from Teddy. He then wrote that he had finished high school, third in his class, and she was still the best teacher he ever had in his whole life.

Four years after that, she got another letter, saying that while things had been tough at times, he'd stayed in school, had stuck with it, and would soon graduate from college with the highest of honors. He assured Mrs. Thompson that she was still the best and favorite teacher he had ever had in his whole life.

Then four more years passed and yet another letter came. This time he explained that after he got his bachelor's degree, he decided to go a little further .

The letter explained that she was still the best and favorite teacher he ever had. But now his name was a little longer....The letter was signed, Theodore F. Stoddard , MD.

The story does not end there. You see, there was yet another letter that spring. Teddy said he had met this girl and was going to be married. He explained that his father had died a couple of years ago and he was wondering if Mrs. Thompson might agree to sit at the wedding in the place that was usually reserved for the mother of the groom.

Of course, Mrs. Thompson did. And guess what? She wore that bracelet, the one with several rhinestones missing. Moreover, she made sure she was wearing the perfume that Teddy remembered his mother wearing on their last Christmas together.

They hugged each other, and Dr. Stoddard whispered in Mrs. Thompson's ear, "Thank you Mrs. Thompson for believing in me Thank you so much for making me feel important and showing me that I could make a difference."

Mrs. Thompson, with tears in her eyes, whispered back.

She said, "Teddy, you have it all wrong. You were the one who taught me that I could make a difference I didn't know how to teach until I met you."

=========================
Warm someone's heart today . .. . pass this along.

I love this story so very much, I cry every time I read it. Just try to make a difference in someone's life today? tomorrow? just "do it"

Random acts of kindness, I think they call it.

Who loves you more than Mom?

A teacher was trying to teach her class a lesson about fractions. After the lesson, she tested one of the boys who was in a large family. Johnny, she said, “There are 6 people in your family. Your mom bakes a pie and she cuts it up for you, what fraction of the pie will you receive?”

Johnny, thought for a minute and said, “One-fifth.” The teacher said, “Now, remember there are 6 people in your family, how big would your piece of pie be.” And again, the boy said, “One-fifth.” The teacher said, “No, you don’t understand fractions.” And Johnny respectfully said, “You don’t understand my mom. She would have said that she didn’t want any.”

THE BIRD CAGE

THE BIRD CAGE

There once was a man named George Thomas, a pastor in a small New England town. One Easter Sunday morning he came to the Church carrying a rusty, bent, old bird cage, and set it by the pulpit. Several eyebrows were raised and, as if in response, Pastor Thomas began to speak.

"I was walking through town yesterday when I saw a young boy coming toward me, swinging this bird cage. On the bottom of the cage were three little wild birds, shivering with cold and fright. I stopped the lad and asked, "What you got there son?"

"Just some old birds," came the reply.

"What are you gonna do with them?" I asked.

"Take 'em home and have fun with 'em. I'm gonna tease 'em and pull out their feathers to make 'em fight. I'm gonna have a real good time."

"But you'll get tired of those birds sooner or later. What will you do then?"

"Oh, I got some cats. They like birds. I'll take 'em to them."

The pastor was silent for a moment. "How much do you want for those birds, son?"

"Huh??!!! Why, you don't want them birds, mister. They're just plain old field birds. They don't sing - they ain't even pretty!"

"How much?"

The boy sized up the pastor as if he were crazy and said, "$10?".

The pastor reached in his pocket and took out a ten dollar bill. He placed it in the boy's hand. In a flash, the boy was gone.

The pastor picked up the cage and gently carried it to the end of the alley where there was a tree and a grassy spot. Setting the cage down, he opened the door, and by softly tapping the bars persuaded the birds out, setting them free.

Well, that explained the empty bird cage on the pulpit, and then the pastor began to tell this story.

One day Satan and Jesus were having a conversation. Satan had just come from the Garden of Eden, and he was gloating and boasting.

"Yes, sir, I just caught the world full of people down there. Set me a trap, used bait I knew they couldn't resist. Got 'em all!"

"What are you going to do with them?" Jesus asked.

"Oh, I'm gonna have fun! I'm gonna teach them how to marry and divorce each other. How to hate and abuse each other. How to drink and smoke and curse. How to invent guns and bombs and kill each other. I'm really gonna have fun!"

"And what will you do when you get done with them?", Jesus asked.

"Oh, I'll kill 'em."

"How much do you want for them?"

"Oh, you don't want those people. They ain't no good. Why, you take them and they'll just hate you. They'll spit on you, curse you and kill you!! You don't want those people!!"

"How much?"

Satan looked at Jesus and sneered, "All your tears, and all your blood." Jesus paid the price.

The pastor picked up the cage he opened the door and he walked from the pulpit.

God is Lovingly Watching You

I love children. They teach me a great deal. It is always need to watch kids play "peak a boo." Especially children still in the stage where they think as long as they can't see you, you can't see them. When you play hide and seek, they think as long as their head is covered they are well hidden. My friend was recently tell me about his experience.

This flawed theory probably displayed itself best when my friend explain it and he said, "The other night when we were struggling to keep her in bed, we told her if we saw her out of bed one more time that she was going to get punished. We left her room thinking we had made our point; but no more than two minutes later, we saw her emerge with her blanket draped over her head trying to sneak past us. She thought since she couldn't see us, her blanket was working like some kind of cloak of invisibility. We laughed so hard that we couldn't punish her.

As funny and as silly as the philosophy "as long as I can't see you, you can't see me" is many of us live our lives that way when it comes to God. We think as long as we are not at church or with our Christian family God can't see and doesn't know how we live. Even if we don't believe that, many times that is the way we act. The truth of the matter is God sees all and we are no more clever than a two year old.

Hebrews 4:13 says "...there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do." We can't hide from God, and he knows the things we do -- whether we do them out in the open or try to hide them away in secret. So, as Christians let us try to live our lives in full knowledge that our heavenly father is watching us at all times.

We sing the words to a song, "There's an all seeing eye watching you." There is a heart full of love behind those eyes. God is not out to hurt us, but to see the bigger picture guiding us into something in our best interest.

Devotional Thoughts and Teaching Illustrations About Hospitality

“Hospitality–Open Your Circle”
In New Testament times, hospitality was an obligation of the host family and of the entire village. So when a guest arrived late at night, it was all right for the host to go next door and ask for extra loaves of bread. It was all right. But it wasn't convenient. When the host in Jesus' story pounded on his friend's door late one night, it was a pain! It was common for the whole family to sleep together in a single room, often on a common mat unrolled on the floor. (Thus, "My children are with me in bed,"  For the father to get up, and stumble over the whole family, possibly awakening them too, wasn't convenient at all. But Jesus said that such a householder would get up anyway—if the neighbor made a pest of himself and kept on knocking.

Hospitality
Acts of generosity and friendship towards strangers. God’s people are called to be hospitable as part of their duty to others and in gratitude for the salvation they have received from God. Showing hospitality includes the responsibility to protect those received as guests.

Devotional Thoughts and Teaching Illustrations About Trust

A Person’s Favorite Song is Purely a Matter of Taste

Stephey Belynskyj, starts each confirmation class with a jar full of beans. He asks his students to guess how many beans are in the jar, and on a big pad of paper writes down their estimates. Then, next to those estimates, he helps them make another list: their favorite songs. When the lists are complete, he reveals the actual number of beans in the jar. The whole class looks over their guesses, to see which estimate was closest to being right. Belynskyj then turns to the list of favorite songs. “And which one of these is closest to being right?” he asks. The students protest that there is no “right answer”; a person’s favorite song is purely a matter of taste. Belynskyj, who holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from Notre Dame asks, “When you decide what to believe in terms of your faith, is that more like guessing the number of beans, or more like choosing your favorite song?” Always, Belynskyj says, from old as well as young, he gets the same answer: Choosing one’s faith is more like choosing a favorite song. When Belynskyj told me this, it took my breath away. “After they say that, do you confirm them?” I asked him. “Well,” smiled Belynskyj, “First I try to argue them out of it.”

Survey on Absolute Truth

In the survey taken in early 1991, interviewees were asked, 'do you agree strongly, agree somewhat, disagree somewhat, or disagree strongly with the following statement: There is no such thing as absolute truth; different people can define truth in conflicting ways and still be correct.? Only 28% of the respondents expressed strong belief in "absolute truth,? and more surprisingly, only 23 percent of born-again or evangelical Christians accepted this idea! What a telling revelation! If more than 75 percent of the followers of Christ say nothing can be known for certain, does this indicate, as it seems, that they are not convinced that Jesus existed, that He is who He claimed to be, that His Word in authentic, that God created the heavens and earth, or that eternal life awaits the believer? That's what the findings appear to mean. If there is no absolute truth, then by definition nothing can be said to be absolutely true. To the majority, apparently, it's all relative. Nothing is certain. Might be. Might not be. Who knows for sure? Take your guess and hope for the best!

Logos Dictionary Themes
Reliance on and confidence in a person. Scripture affirms the total trustworthiness of God, especially in relation to his promises to his people. Christian faith is, essentially, trust in the person and character of God. While Scripture insists that believers should be able to trust one another, it also provides examples of false or misplaced trust.

Teens and Internet

MINISTRY QUESTION:  In an earlier posting we received the following question:

I am seeking some resources to help with a problem we are experiencing with our teens and the internet, specifically with things like Facebook and the like. It would seem some may have posted inappropriate images and commentary. Our elders are concerned that this may be part of a larger problem relating to the general coarseness of young people coming from the influence of school specifically and culture generally. We are looking for some resources or suggestions concerning a addressing the parents, children and the congregation generally. Gary Selby (Raleigh, North Carolina)

Here are the responses we have received so far:

Joe Chase, Missionary to Jamaica, Denton, Texas:

Beth Robertson has some really good materials out regarding safeguarding children.  Some of the stuff she has written will scare you to death.  You can download a good bit of her presentation from the Preston Road church of Christ web site. The Web links for Beth's presentation are:
http://www.prestonroad.org/images/stories/Sermons/part1.mp3
http://www.prestonroad.org/images/stories/Sermons/part2.mp3

I believe every eldership ought to give this a listen and order the materials she has put together from her research.  No child will be safe until we are all proactive in making them safe.

Vic Pruett, White House, Tennessee:

I found that Dr. David Fraze ( David.Fraze@rhchurch.org ) is a great resource on adolescents & culture.  He is our best (C of C) person when it come to answering questions and giving advice on how to navigate things such as face book, my space, youtube, texting, and all things postmodern.  Just don’t tell him I said that.

I actually have a face book account and it allows me to interact with young people in a very unique way.  Teens are all about dialogue, for some reason they can share so much of themselves (their passion, faith, sin, fear, struggles, etc) on the internet (facebook, myspace) and yet be closed mouthed in Sunday morning Bible class.  They will talk to me on facebook about very deep issues and yet be closed to the idea of talking to me at my office or at McDonald’s over a coke.  I’m not saying this is a good thing, but it is an opportunity to reach our teens.  We can take Jesus into this post modern marketplace (of face book, myspace, youtube)  and find out what they are really up to (which is scary).  Young people are open to this new form of dialogue, we should take advantage of it.

One more thing.  I am always outing kids to their parents about improper behavior (I’m not breaking any confidentiality rules since they are talking about it publically on these internet postings).  You don’t have to spend a lot of time on face book to do all of this (I spend no more than 5 min a day on that stuff).

Also  I remind parents to check their children’s accounts, I do this from the pulpit every now and then.  I don’t know if any of this was helpful, thanks for listening.

James Guy, University church, Monroe, Louisiana:

Like most things, the internet can be used for good or bad.  Our youth group and college group both use Facebook as probably THE primary source of sharing information, inviting friends to events, communicating with one another (next to text messaging), etc.  It has helped our kids be more “connected” (in modern terms) throughout the week when they probably wouldn’t see or speak to each other otherwise.  The good thing about Facebook and Myspace is that friends can see what other friends have on there.

My wife and I both have Facebooks and are our kids friends, and we also require our kids to provide us with their logins and passwords, and we check them ever so often to see what is on there. We also see what some of their school friends have on there, and have had them remove 1 or 2 from their friends list because of things that were on their space.  I think that is how it should be dealt with.  Encourage parents to check up on their kids (that’s still legal in most states), and if you see one of your church kids with something on there that shouldn’t be, I would suggest dealing with it with them directly and with their parents as appropriate.

I would also add that the internet allows for more open viewing of the “general coarseness” of what your kids are probably doing and saying at school or with friends when you don’t hear and see them.  In that respect it is a plus.  The main thing I think is to be aware of what your kids (and perhaps church kids) have on their, and encourage and teach their parents to do the same.  Facebook and Myspace are not that hard to use for that purpose even if you are not so computer literate.      www.universitycc.net

Kent Jobe, College Avenue, El Dorado, Arkansas:

In regard to Mr. Selby's request, I would suggest www.syncswim.com   This is a seminar presented by the Church and Family organization through Harding.

Although I have not personally participated in the seminar, it comes very highly recommended and I know they have put in a lot of time and effort in their presentation.  I also know that they are really trying to keep their presentations current and relevant.

Brandon Tittle, Assistant Director,  Church & Family, Harding University:

I was forwarded an email you sent with questions from various ministers. Our office, The Institute for Church & Family, has an experience that might help Gary Selby. It is called SyncSwim, and it is designed to help parents, teachers, grandparents, etc. understand youth culture and how to help teens "swim."
