SPEAK GENTLY

SPEAK GENTLY

Speak gently. It is better by far
to rule by love than fear.
Speak gently. Let no harsh word mar
the good you may do here.

Speak gently to the young, for they
will have enough to bear;
pass through this life as best they may,
'tis full of anxious care.

Speak gently to the aged one
Grieve not the care-worn heart,
whose sand of life are nearly run,
let such in peace depart.

Speak gently, kindly to the poor,
let no harsh tone be heard.
They have enough they must endure
without an unkind word.

Speak gently...'tis a little thing
dropped in the heart's deep well;
The good, the joy that it may bring
eternity shall tell.

THE BIRD CAGE

THE BIRD CAGE

There once was a man named George Thomas, a pastor in a small New England town. One Easter Sunday morning he came to the Church carrying a rusty, bent, old bird cage, and set it by the pulpit. Several eyebrows were raised and, as if in response, Pastor Thomas began to speak.

"I was walking through town yesterday when I saw a young boy coming toward me, swinging this bird cage. On the bottom of the cage were three little wild birds, shivering with cold and fright. I stopped the lad and asked, "What you got there son?"

"Just some old birds," came the reply.

"What are you gonna do with them?" I asked.

"Take 'em home and have fun with 'em. I'm gonna tease 'em and pull out their feathers to make 'em fight. I'm gonna have a real good time."

"But you'll get tired of those birds sooner or later. What will you do then?"

"Oh, I got some cats. They like birds. I'll take 'em to them."

The pastor was silent for a moment. "How much do you want for those birds, son?"

"Huh??!!! Why, you don't want them birds, mister. They're just plain old field birds. They don't sing - they ain't even pretty!"

"How much?"

The boy sized up the pastor as if he were crazy and said, "$10?".

The pastor reached in his pocket and took out a ten dollar bill. He placed it in the boy's hand. In a flash, the boy was gone.

The pastor picked up the cage and gently carried it to the end of the alley where there was a tree and a grassy spot. Setting the cage down, he opened the door, and by softly tapping the bars persuaded the birds out, setting them free.

Well, that explained the empty bird cage on the pulpit, and then the pastor began to tell this story.

One day Satan and Jesus were having a conversation. Satan had just come from the Garden of Eden, and he was gloating and boasting.

"Yes, sir, I just caught the world full of people down there. Set me a trap, used bait I knew they couldn't resist. Got 'em all!"

"What are you going to do with them?" Jesus asked.

"Oh, I'm gonna have fun! I'm gonna teach them how to marry and divorce each other. How to hate and abuse each other. How to drink and smoke and curse. How to invent guns and bombs and kill each other. I'm really gonna have fun!"

"And what will you do when you get done with them?", Jesus asked.

"Oh, I'll kill 'em."

"How much do you want for them?"

"Oh, you don't want those people. They ain't no good. Why, you take them and they'll just hate you. They'll spit on you, curse you and kill you!! You don't want those people!!"

"How much?"

Satan looked at Jesus and sneered, "All your tears, and all your blood." Jesus paid the price.

The pastor picked up the cage he opened the door and he walked from the pulpit.

THE MONKEY WITH THE WOODEN APPLES

Let Go And Be Happy

If you keep on thinking of all the ways in which Others cheated you, fought with you, degraded you or angered you; Your heart will forever be full of hatred.

Learn to let go. And be happy.

The Monkey With The Wooden Apples

There once was a happy monkey wandering the jungle, eating delicious fruit when hungry, and resting when tired. One day he came upon a house, where he saw a bowl of the most beautiful apples. He took one in each hand and ran back into the forest.
He sniffed the apples and smelled nothing. He tried to eat them, but hurt his teeth. They were made of wood, but they were beautiful, and when the other monkeys saw them, he held onto them even tighter.
He admired his new possessions proudly as he wandered the jungle. They glistened red in the sun, and seemed perfect to him. He became so attached to them, that he didn’t even notice his hunger at first.
A fruit tree reminded him, but he felt the apples in his hands. He couldn’t bear to set them down to reach for the fruit. In fact, he couldn’t relax, either, if he was to defend his apples. A proud, but less happy monkey continued to walk along the forest trails.
The apples became heavier, and the poor little monkey thought about leaving them behind. He was tired, hungry, and he couldn’t climb trees or collect fruit with his hands full. What if he just let go?
Letting go of such valuable things seemed crazy, but what else could he do? He was so tired. Seeing the next fruit tree, and smelling it’s fruit was enough. He dropped the wooden apples and reached up for his meal. He was happy again.
Letting Go Of Wooden Apples
Like that little monkey, we sometimes carry things that seem too valuable to let go. A person carries an image of themselves as “productive” carries it like a shiny wooden apple. But in reality, their busyness leaves them tired, and hungry for a better life. Still, letting go seems crazy. Even their worries are sacred apples – they prove s/he’s “doing everything s/he can.” S/He holds onto them compulsively.
This is a hard thing to see. We identify so strongly with our things even, feeling pain when our cars are dented. How much more powerfully will God identify us with our Faith and God’s commandments?? Have you obeyed them? but we have always searched after vain pleasures to make us happy , Yet they don’t always feed our souls, do they? And we become tired of defending them.
How else could the story end?
The monkey might be found dead of hunger, under a beautiful tree, with fruit within reach, but still grasping his wooden apples.
I chose to end it with him letting go, because only with open hands can we receive anything. Ask God & He will give you more greater riches.

God Doesn't Want You to Be Happy

There is a story of a young boy who sat down and poured out his heart to God about what he wanted for his future. The boy asked God if he could live in a mansion when he grew up. He also wanted to marry a tall, blonde-haired, blue-eyed girl and have three boys. He was even specific about what he wanted his boys to do when they grew up. He wanted one of them to be a politician, another to be a business man, and one to be a quarterback. He only had one more request, and that was that one day he would climb great mountains and be a great adventurer.

Well, the boy grew up. He ended up hurting his knee in football and could not even climb a tree — let alone a great mountain. He had to live in the city in an apartment for his job. He ended up falling in love and marrying a short, brown-haired, brown-eyed girl. He had three lovely daughters. One grew up to be a teacher, one a nurse and one a writer. He lived a good and happy life. It was not until he was an older man that he remembered the prayer he made as child. Looking back on all the things he wanted and did not get, the man became depressed. In his sadness he cried out to God and asked why he didn’t get what he wanted. God simply replied, "Because I wanted you to be happy."

God has promised us that He will give us good gifts (Matthew 7:11). Are you seeing the blessings God has for you? He knows what we need better than we do. Let us put our faith and trust in him.

Kevin

Happy Moments

I took my sons out for a walk at a nearby lake the other day. The weather was perfect for it. The sky was clear, the temperature was warm, the sun was dancing off the waves, and flowers were blooming along the walk path surrounding the water. Couples both young and old were walking along the path enjoying all of this God given beauty. Dozens of people were fishing peacefully along the banks and in boats. Children were running and playing with their dogs. Families were setting up picnic dinners for later. Some people were just sitting in the grass looking blissfully out on the water. I even saw one young woman praying with a joyful smile on her face as she sat under a tree. Never had I seen so many people spending their time so well.

The day after the great teacher and writer Leo Buscaglia died a note was found in his typewriter. It simply said, "Every moment spent in unhappiness is a moment of happiness lost." I for one don’t want to lose any more moments of happiness that I have left in this world. I want to use and enjoy every single one of them. It doesn’t matter if they are spent working, playing, eating, reading, singing, praying, or just walking in the sunshine. I want to spend my time well and fill my life with happy moments. I want to choose love, share joy, and be one with God all day long every single day of my life.

Happiness isn’t something you find. Happiness is something you choose. Happiness is something you live. Life here is both precious and brief. Spend it well. Live it joyously. Don’t waste a second of it on unhappiness. Go to work with a smile on your face. Greet others with love in your heart. Exercise with pleasure. Play with delight. Pray with both peace and joy. Learn from your pain. Grow from your troubles. And always use every moment you are given to choose more love, joy, peace, happiness, and oneness with God.

 ===

Am I Happy?

If there is any sadness I make a strong effort to be free of it quickly, otherwise it grows like a vine in the rainy season: by midday I will be confused; by evening a whole jungle of weak, wasteful and negative attitudes will have taken deep roots in my mind. The result equals chaos. Sometimes I reach a stage where the attitude is: "So what if I feel the blues today? It is my life; no one else will be affected".

Firstly, the more I allow myself to experience sorrow, the less time I have available to be happy and contented. It sounds ridiculously obvious, but am I aware of the value of happiness? It is an extremely rare commodity, and the cost goes sky high.

Secondly, is it my life? Yes, I am living it, but am I not a member of a family or a co-worker with others, and am I not part of society? If so, then every movement affects and is affected by those around me.

Learn the Formula to a Funny Story for Your Next Presentation

How to share a funny story in a presentation.

Unless you're a natural comedian, it's hard to come up with our own comedic material. This three step formula helps anyone come up with an easily scripted joke.

Inc interviewed David Nihill and asked him how inexperienced presenters can add humor to a speech. He says it's easy to find a personal story that related to the topic you're presenting and using it to connect to the audience. Once you find that story, you'll need to:
  1. Set up the story in a relatable way. "You ideally want everyone in the room to be like, 'yeah, that happened to me,'" Nihill said.
  2. Get specific and make it about it you. Start telling them about your own crazy experience.
  3. Deliver the unexpected. At this point, the audience assumes that they know where you're going with this. But you're most likely to get a laugh if you can surprise them.

If you've watched Seinfeld, you'll see that they often follow this formula in some way. You may not get your own TV show by following this, but you'll be able to use humor to get the audience to chuckle a few times and stay engaged.

Churches in the Shape of Scripture

Churches in the Shape of Scripture
Series by Robert Prater
Spring of 2015

Part 1
We in churches of Christ are a very unique group of people. Our beliefs and practices seem very strange to some. This sermon is the beginning of a new sermon series entitled, “Churches in the Shape of Scripture.” It is our hope that these lessons will help us have a renewed conviction that being a New Testament-shaped church is a goal worth pursing, and that doing things God’s way really does matter. These lessons will be a great opportunity to invite others who might have questions surrounding what churches of Christ teach.

Part 2
Last week we began a new sermon series titled, “Churches in the Shape of Scripture.” We introduced the principle that churches of Christ are all about restoration. We looked at this notion from the Old Testament. In this second sermon in the series, we’ll take this idea of restoration over to the New Testament and focus our attention on the church.

Part 3
This is the third sermon in the series titled, “Churches in the Shape of Scripture.” We’re talking about who we are in churches of Christ. We’ve introduced the series talking about how we are a people concerned about restoring the beliefs and practices of the New Testament church. This sermon will be on “Salvation in the Shape of the New Testament” This is one of the most important differences you’ll find between churches of Christ and most other religious groups.

Part 4
Last week we started looking at “Salvation in the Shape of the New Testament.” This sermon continues looking at this issue by noting how our belief that baptism is necessary for salvation was actually the unanimous belief of Christianity for its first 1,500 years. We’ll also see the connection in the New Testament between salvation and baptism.

Click here for the Francis Chan video that Robert showed in his sermon.

Part 5
This is a continuation of our special sermon series titled “Churches in the Shape of Scripture.” This sermon discusses some of our beliefs and practices that distinguish us in churches of Christ from most other churches, particularly at our belief that baptism is a necessary condition for receiving salvation.

Part 6
This sermon is about “The Lord’s Day and the Lord’s Supper in the Shape of the New Testament.” This is another distinction we have in churches of Christ: we believe eating the Lord’s Supper every Sunday is an important part of God’s plan for the church.

Part 7
This is the second part of last week’s sermon about “The Lord’s Day and the Lord’s Supper in the Shape of the New Testament.” In this lesson, we’ll explore and contemplate what this weekly activity is all about. We’ll look at some of the terms which are associated with it in the New Testament.

Part 8
In this sermon, we’ll begin looking at “Church Organization & Leadership in the Shape of the New Testament.” This is another difference between churches of Christ and most other church groups. That difference is how the church is organized and governed. And we believe this is an important part of God’s plan for His church.

Part 9
This sermon is the second part of the previous sermon in our “Churches in the Shape of Scripture” series. We’ll continue to look at “Church Organization & Leadership in the Shape of the New Testament.” This is another difference between churches of Christ and most other church groups. That difference is how the church is organized and governed. And we believe this is an important part of God’s plan for His church.

Part 10
This sermon titled “Musical Praise in the Assembly” looks at what is probably the most obvious difference between us and many of our Bible believing friends. We’re talking about why we in churches of Christ in our worship assemblies practice vocal only praise. We’ll begin by walking through the Bible to see how we and most Christians throughout history, came to the conclusion that Christian worship was instrument-free for most of its history.

Part 11
This is the second part of last week’s sermon called “Musical Praise in the Assembly”, which looks at what is probably the most obvious difference between us and many of our Bible believing friends. We’re talking about why we in churches of Christ in our worship assemblies practice vocal only praise. We’ll begin by walking through the Bible to see how we and most Christians throughout history, came to the conclusion that Christian worship was instrument-free for most of its history.

Part 12
This sermon is a continuation of our special sermon series titled “Churches in the Shape of Scripture.” Is our practice of male leadership in our assemblies an out-of-date, sexist, chauvinistic mindset? Does the New Testament really teach what we practice? In this lesson we’ll look at the bigger picture of what the Bible says about men and women.

Part 13
This is the final sermon in the “Churches in the Shape of Scripture” series. In the last lesson we left off stating that we believe God has called men to lead in the worship assembly to serve as a visual expression of His will for male spiritual leadership in the church. This lesson focuses on Paul’s instructions regarding the roles in the assembly found in 1 Timothy 2:8-15.

Make Better Presentations by Putting the Key Info in the First Minute

Put your presentation’s important information in the first minute to grab your audience’s attention. You’ll engage people more by showing them why they should listen—and make for a better presentation in the process.
If you’re short on time, this method is even more important. You have to pack everything you can into the time you have. You may feel like everything in your presentation is key, so think about the one take-away you want the audience to have when your talk is over. Then, make that your leading point during the first minute. For more tips on how to have a successful presentation, check out the full post linked below.

Be Strong And Courageous by Randy Roper
In the first lesson in our series on Joshua, we look at how God prepared Joshua to lead Israel into the Promised Land, and how we can all find strength and courage to face the unknown in life.

The Power of The Lord by Rob Long
The power and strength of the Lord are evident in Israel's crossing of the Jordan River into the Promised Land. That same power is at work in our lives today.

When Walls Fall Down by Rob Long
God guided the armies of Israel to walk in obedience. Their obedience resulted in God's provision--the walls of Jericho coming down.

Confronting Sin by Kent Risley
Sin has lasting implications on individuals and the community surrounding that individual. Learn valuable lessons from the story of Achan in Joshua 7.

How Will You Be Remembered? by Randy Roper
If you have the opportunity to choose your final words on earth, what would say?  Last words are more meaningful if they have been underscored by the way a person lived his/her life.  At the end of his life, Joshua chooses to make the name of God known rather than make a name for himself.

Choose This Day by Randy Roper
Life is filled with choices.  With so many decisions to make, we can easily feel overwhelmed. But one decision stands out from all the others. It is a decision that demands action and has implications. What will you choose?

Coveting or Greed

On the night of November 16,1930, Mrs. Henrietta Garrett, a lonely 81-year-old widow, died in her home in Philadelphia and, unwillingly, started the most fantastic case of inheritance litigation in history.

She had failed to leave a will, or no will was found, to her $17 million estate: a mystery left unsolved. She had expertly handled her financial affairs since the death of her husband in 1895 and, therefore, she must have realized that, without a will, her fortune would become involved in many legal battles.

Although Mrs. Garrett had, at the time of her death, only one known living relative, a second cousin, and less than a dozen friends, attempts to prove relationship to her and to claim a part or all of her estate have since been made by more than 26,000 persons from 47 states and 29 foreign countries, represented by more than 3,000 lawyers.

In their frantic efforts, these alleged relatives have committed perjury, faked family records, changed their own names, altered data in church Bibles, and concocted absurd tales of illegitimacy. As a result, twelve were fined, ten received jail sentences, two committed suicide, and three were murdered. The estate has, in the meantime, increased to $30 million.

All of this bedlam came from discontented people -- people who are not happy with what they have. God knew that lack of contentment would be a major problem for people. So, that's where his tenth instruction for happy living originated.

Personal God

Never again are we to look at the stars, as we did when we were children, and wonder how far it is to God.  A being outside our world would be a spectator, looking on but taking no part in this life, where we try to be brave despite all the bafflement.  A God who created, and withdrew, could be mighty, but he could not be love.  Who could love a God remote, when suffering is our lot?  Our God is closer than our problems, for they are out there, to be faced; He is here, beside us, Emmanuel.

                                      ...  Joseph E. McCabe, Handel's Messiah
