Relaxation
Every now and then go away, have a little relaxation, for when you come back to your work your judgment will be surer, since to remain constantly at work will cause you to lose power of judgment…Go some distance away because then the work appears smaller, and more of it can be taken in at a glance, and lack of harmony or proportion is more readily seen.” These are the words of Leonardo da Vinci, and no idler he; he excelled as a painter, sculptor, poet, architect, engineer, city planner, scientist, inventor, anatomist, military genius, and philosopher.

Rest in Six Aspects
  • Creation rest, broken by sin Genesis 2:2
  • Redemption rest, secured in Christ Zeph. 3:17
  • The sinner’s rest, by coming to Christ Matt. 11:28
  • The saint’s rest, in communion with Christ Mark 6:30

Meaning of the Unstrung Bow
According to a Greek legend, in ancient Athens a man noticed the great storyteller Aesop playing childish games with some little boys. He laughed and jeered at Aesop, asking him why he wasted his time in such frivolous activity.
Aesop responded by picking up a bow, loosening its string, and placing it on the ground. Then he said to the critical Athenian, “Now, answer the riddle, if you can. Tell us what the unstrung bows implies.”
The man looked at it for several moments but had no idea what point Aesop was trying to make. Aesop explained, “If you keep a bow always bent, it will break eventually; but if you let it go slack, it will be more fit for use when you want it.”
People are also like that. That’s why we all need to take time to rest. In today’s Scripture, Jesus prescribed time off for His wearied disciples after they had returned from a prolonged period of ministry. And in the Old Testament, God set a pattern for us when He “rested from all His work” (Gen. 2:3).
Shouldn’t we take His example seriously? Start by setting aside a special time to relax physically and renew yourself emotionally and spiritually. You will be at your best for the Lord if you have taken time to loosen the bow.

A promise from God is a statement we can depend on with absolute confidence. Here are 12 promises for the Christian to claim.
  • God’s presence— “I will never leave thee” (Heb. 13:5)
  • God’s protection—”I am thy shield” (Gen. 15:1)
  • God’s power—”I will strengthen thee” (Isa. 41:10)
  • God’s provision—”I will help thee” (Isa. 41:10)
  • God’s leading—”And when He putteth forth His own sheep, He goeth before them” (John 10:4)
  • God’s purposes— “I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil” (Jer. 29:11)
  • God’s rest—”Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matt. 11:28)

Church of Christ Preacher Search

Two churches of Christ are now in need of a gospel preacher.  
 
The church at Broken Bow, Oklahoma will have a need for a full-time preacher.  Broken Bow is just twelve miles above my home town of Idabel in McCurtain County.  You can view their website by the hyperlink below.
 
 
The rural congregation Graceton in east Texas near the community of Dianie is in need of a preacher.  Their preacher Jason Reeves will be preaching for the West Irwin congregation in Tyler.   
 
The Graceton congregation has around eighty in attendance.  It is around 25 or 30 miles north of Longview.  Hopely you can help get a sound preacher for that congregation.

Fishermen

There is a story about a peculiar fisherman from Minnesota. You see, this fisherman was very well prepared. He knew how to fish. He had everything you need to be a good fisherman. He had poles, nets, bait, and even a really nice boat; but this fisherman had a problem. You see, for all his preparation he never caught anything. Not one fish. Not one, not ever. And you know why he never caught a fish? What do you think? It's an easy answer: He never went fishing. He had all the knowledge and all the equipment, but he never got into the boat, he never left the dock.

When Jesus called some of his first disciples he called them by telling them he would make them fishers of men and in fact, that is what he did. Sure he taught them and mentored them, but ultimately he sent them out to go share the gospel with those who had not heard it.

There are too many of us that have spent all this time preparing and studying the scripture, but have yet to share the gospel with anyone. Don't be like the fisherman who has all the knowledge and equipment he needs, but never catches a fish because he never goes out fishing. Jesus' last commandment before he ascended was to

go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. (Matthew 28:19-20) 

That commandment was meant for more than just the disciples standing there. It was meant for you and me as well. So we need to make sure that we are going and being fishers of men.

WHY ARE THERE FOUR DIFFERENT GOSPELS?

"John's gospel is designed to bring you to your knees in wonder, love, and praise.

Luke's is meant to make you sit up and think hard about Jesus as Lord of the whole world.

Matthew's is like a beautifully bound book which the Christian must study and ponder at leisure, steadily reordering one's life in the process.

Mark's is like a hastily printed revolutionary tract, stuffed into a back pocket, and frequently pulled out, read by torchlight, and whispered to one's co-conspirators.

You need all four.  You never know when you are going to have to call on them."
